Book Talk Thursday: Matilda

So I thought I would join another Linky. Today I am linking up with Reading Toward the Stars to share a book that I have been reading.

I actually just finished Matilda (not for the first time!) by Roald Dahl. This book was a favorite of mine as a kid, and I loved it just as much this time around. As a soon-to-be 3rd grade teacher, I definitely want to sneak this one into the curriculum. I have just always loved the way that Dahl empowers kids to read and value their minds.

I've also found some great resources for the book, which I plan to use.
I was especially grateful for the questions and discussion topics available here and here.

Incidentally, I also LOVE the movie version, and I've been dying to get to the Broadway show.
The movie can be used to draw comparisons in the classroom.

Evidence-Based Terms

This is one of my favorite anchor charts. I used this one last year and left it up after the mini-lesson. My students really started using these phrases in their writing, and it turned out to be such a simple way to make their writing sound so much more intelligent. I will definitely be using it again this year!

Story Elements

Another anchor chart! This one focuses on Story Elements - something I will review with my kids at the beginning of the year and then refer to throughout the year. Got the idea from Pinterest (weird, I know).

Here's another anchor chart! This one is cause and effect and is, once again, inspired by a chart I found on Pinterest. I love having the signal words!

CAFE Cards: Comprehension

Hi All!

Here are some comprehension cards that I've made for my CAFE board. I plan on hanging them under the "C" in CAFE with blue or green ribbon :) Each individual card measures 5x8. I've printed two on a sheet. I print each sheet as an 8x10 on photo paper, then just cut them in half to hang them individually as they are introduced in my class!

Literary Genre Cards

Here are some literary genre cards that I made up.

I plan on having a display of these in my classroom, adding a new genre to the display each time one is introduced. This will ensure that students are familiar with the characteristics of each genre, because they will have firsthand experience with each one.

These are all 5x7 cards. I print them on photopaper (at Costco) as 5x7's and then laminate them. At Costco, a 5x7 is only $0.39!

Sequencing

Another anchor chart!

This one is inspired by another pin I found on (you guessed it), Pinterest.

I love including transition words, because the poster automatically becomes a resource for reading AND writing.

Theme

So I've posted this anchor chart on Pinterest, and I've already gotten more than 60 repins! Now that it is on my blog, it will actually lead to a source.

This one is useful for a discussion of theme. I used this when student teaching, and it was great! I really like having the examples for students to see. I based this anchor chart on one I found on Pinterest, but this one matches my classroom theme! Once again, this is a 16x20 print, and can be printed on photo paper and laminated!
